Cienfuegos

In front of the Caribbean Sea, around a wide and gentle bay, French emigrants coming from Burdeos, Philadelphia and Louisiana founded April 22, 1819 the colony of Fernandina de Jagua. In 1830, exalted to village, it exchanged its name for that of Cienfuegos, in honor to the general governor from Cuba, Don José Cienfuegos. Fifty years later city was proclaimed and it won for its beauty the epithet of The Pearl of the South. Towards the end of the XIX century the prosperous city had become the fourth in importance of the country.

Of marked American influence, the necropolis Tomás Acea, built in the decade of 1920, stands out for its monumental facade, very similar to the Athenian Parthenon, and to have been conceived by way of garden, that which allows to achieve a harmonious integration between the funeral enclosures and the environment.
