Las Tunas

Of very recent appearance in the international tourist scenario of the biggest of the Antilles, the province of Las Tunas comprises 6 584 km2 of the northeastern portion of the island of Cuba, and it counts with more than 35 absolutely virgin beaches in its 265 kilometers of irregular coasts.

The sugar production and the cattle rising are the two fundamental economic activities of this territory, of which historical references exist from 1510, but that only starting from the second half of the XVIII century it began to be populated very slowly.

The Villa of Victoria de las Tunas was founded in 1759, and today it constitutes a considered city as the capital of the sculpture in Cuba, because in its little more than 600 km2 of extension, some 70 monumental and environmental works are exhibited.

Places of relevance linked with the Cuban Independent gest, that begun in the XIX century, many exist in this province, and evidences of this active participation can be in the General Vicente García Provincial Museum. There are also testimonies in stone, as the Fortress of the Loma (National Monument) built in Puerto Padre, an establishment that began to grow almost at the end of the decade of 1860, and that today stores a true natural curiosity: in its pier it is one of the few springs of sweet water of the island that pours their waters in the bank of the sea.

Puerto Padre is, also, the next town to the area of the nascent tourist pole of Las Tunas: the Covarrubias beach, of fine white sands, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean , and protected by a coralline barrier of around three kilometers of extension, and where there are in operations 122 hotel rooms.

Very near there, in the Malagueta Bay existent -one of the four in the Las Tunas territory - it is feasible to appreciate a varied species of birds and plants, among those: numerous copies of rosy flamingos, ducks, pelicans and great cranes stand out. The mining-medicinal waters of the Jesus Menéndez municipality and the existence of a humid soil with the biggest reservoir in American crocodiles of the Caribbean (about 20 thousand copies) they are also part of the proposals that it puts in their visitors' hands.

Cradle of Juan Cristóbal Napoles Fajardo, the Cucalambé, one of the most inspired Cuban bucolic poets, and great praiser of the “ten -line stanza”, Las Tunas celebrate the Jornada Cucalambeana, a popular celebration in the one that are reunited: tenth singers, poets, improvisers, and everyone who want to surrender homage -of one or another way - to the indefatigable literary chore of the Cucalambé.

This province has today in operation the most modern steel plant in the country, and the greatest producing of raw sugar the Antonio Guiteras Agroindustrial Complex. It has the back of the Program of United Nations also for the Development (PNUD) and the World Program of Foods (PMA) to take one of the most important programs in production of milk of cow of the Island ahead there.
