Flag of the Republic of Cuba Flag of the Republic of Cuba

In 1850 it was raised for the first time in Cuba, the one that would be definitively her national emblem. Of a great simplicity and with perfect harmony it combines three colors, red, blue and white, to form the Cuban flag: three blue lists -the departments in that the Island was divided for then - two white lists -the force of the independents ideals -, a red triangle -representative of the equality, the fraternity and the freedom and in turn, of the necessary blood poured in the fights by the independence - and a white, solitary star, -like symbol of the absolute freedom among the other peoples - they characterize its beautiful design.

The National Coat of Arms represents our Island. It has the form of ogival oval shield and it is divided in three parts.

In its horizontal superior part a golden key appears, mountains and a nascent sun in the sea - this symbolizes the position of Cuba in the Gulf among the two America, amid the emergence of a new State -.

The white and blue fringes exemplify the departmental position of the Island in the colonial time and they are along the left part. In the vertical right: a Cuban landscape presided over by the real palm or what would be the same thing, the symbol of the undeniable character of the Cuban people.

The National Cuban Anthem was born in Bayamo in the peal of the fight for the independence. Pedro Figueredo, after having composed the melody in 1867 wrote, with great independents sense, the lyrics of this fighting anthem when the insurgent troops took the city in 1868.

Al combate corred, bayameses
Que la Patria os contempla orgullosa
No temáis una muerte gloriosa
Que morir por la Patria, es vivir.

En cadenas vivir es vivir
En afrenta y oprobio sumidos,
Del clarín escuchad el sonido
A las armas, valientes, corred.
