The Ministry of the Basic Industry is the organism in charge of directing, to execute and to control the politics of the State and the Government as for the activities of:

1. Generation, transmission, distribution and commercialization of the electric power
2. Production of the fuel and the lubricant industries, and their distribution
3. Search, exploration and extraction of petroleum and gas
4. Search, exploration, extraction and benefit of solid minerals
5. Production of fertilizers, chemical fibers, industrial gases, articles of plastics, plague killers, paintings, coloring, varnishes and other chemical products
6. Production of tires, cameras and products of the rubber
7. Production and paper conversion, cardboard and cellulose pulp
8. Glass Production and its articles

For its managerial activity it is grouped in eight Unions of Companies that integrate under its responsibility works of:

• Production
• Investigation
• Projects
• Maintenance
• Construction
• Internal Commercialization
• Import of material goods and inputs
• Export of finished products

During 35 years of work it has created an important industrial base and supporting infrastructure, as well as a high specialization of its labor force.

The Sector of Energy comprises all the activities linked to Petroleum and Electricity, organized until the present in two managerial organizations:

CUBAPETROLEO

is the Cuban state entity that integrates the oil activities of:

• Prospecting
• Exploration
• Refinement
• Commercialization

It is a full member of ARPEL and it maintains narrow bonds of collaboration with OLADE and ONUDI. Business wise it is organized in a system that comprises:

• Three companies in charge of perforation and extraction
• Four refineries of petroleum a total capacity of 5, 6 million annual tons
• Provincial Distributor Companies
• National Company of Lubricant, Cubalub.

ELECTRIC UNION

Is a Company of Public Service that has as mission to satisfy the expectations appropriately in the electric service to its clients, for that which generates, transmits, distributes and commercialize the electric power. The electrification level along the country is of 95% with more than 2, 6 million clients.

For its operation has an installed capacity of 3267 MW, in 17 thermoelectric, meetly distributed in the country, with the following distribution nets and transmission from the generating plants until each one of the consumers:

• 6816 km for transmission to 220 and 110 V
• 9224 km for sub transmission to 33 kW
• 33400 km of primary distribution
• 26923 of secondary distribution
• Substations transmissions and sub transmission.
  • 98 KM OF 220 AND 110 KW
  • 2064 KM OF 33 KW

The country has undertaken a wide program of modernization of the existent thermoelectric power stations with the objective of modernizing them with technologies advanced, to achieve bigger readiness in the exploitation, as well as to diminish its specific consumptions of fuel for generated Kwh, and a national bigger use of the raw petroleum.

Among other possible sources of electricity generation it is the cogeneration possibility in the sugar cane factories, by means of the use of trash and straw of the sugar cane.

GEOLOGY AND MINING

Assisted by two managerial organizations:

• Mining Geologist Union. Entity of the Cuban State in charge of the prospecting, exploration and exploitation of metallic and not metallic minerals, except the nickel, operating in the modality to risk with signatures foreigners, being framed in areas very perspective, fundamentally in gold and silver.
• Union of the Nickel. Entity of the Cuban State in charge of the exploitation and prosecution of the nickel and the cobalt starting from tin-ware minerals, through a strong managerial organization with more than 50 years of experience.

BASIC CHEMISTRY

Comprises a wide range of productions, distributed in four managerial organizations of the Cuban State.

• Chemical Union. It contains the productions of fertilizers, industrial gases, paintings, short fibers of rayon, chemical productions starting from electrolysis, plague killers and production of bags and reinforced plastics.
• Vidrieras Caribe Contains the productions of glass containers, ornamental and domestic glassware, articles for hotels and laboratory glassware.
• Union of the Paper Contains the productions of printing paper and to write, papers for containers, gray cardboard, not stuccoed Bristol board, cardboard liner, medium for wrapping, hygienic paper, notebooks and workbooks, trays for eggs, boxes of wavy cardboard, multiskins sacks, cartridges and fiber-asphalt tiles.
• Poligom Industries. It contains the productions of tires and cameras of air, rethreading of tires, wearing shoes textile-rubber and a wide range of rubber technical articles going to different sectors of the economy like the: chemical, sugar, alimentary industries, polygraphist, pharmacist, auto driving and of use for the home.

The Ministry of the Basic Industry for the execution of its strategic objectives maintains a wide preparation program, improvement and its directive training and technical, mission corresponds to guarantee to the Superior School of the Basic Industry, for that which has an appropriate and modern infrastructure.
